Most stockings end up full of things nobody wanted. Novelty socks. A flashlight that dies by New Year’s. Candy that tastes like the wrapper. So let’s do better this year. These stocking stuffers for backpackers and hikers are small, useful, and tested by me on real North Woods trips.

I own all seven, and they ride in my own pack. They’re light, they’re practical, and none of them will end up in a junk drawer. Better yet, a few of them fix problems your backpacker or hiker has been quietly putting up with for years.

What Makes Good Stocking Stuffers for Backpackers and Hikers

Backpackers and hikers are picky about gear, and for good reason. Everything we carry has to earn its weight. Therefore, a good small gift has to pass three tests.

First, it has to be light. If it’s heavy, it stays home. Second, it has to solve a real problem. Cute doesn’t count on mile nine. Third, it should be something she wouldn’t buy for herself. Backpackers will spend hours researching a tent. Meanwhile, they’ll eat dinner with a broken plastic spoon for five years.

Every gift below passes all three tests. I sorted them from tiniest to biggest, so you can match the gift to the stocking. Some are perfect for a day hiker. Others are made for someone who sleeps on the trail.

The Tiny Ones: Four Stocking Stuffers for Backpackers That Weigh Almost Nothing

These four are the smallest on my list. In fact, every one of them could disappear into the toe of a stocking.

TOAKS Titanium Long Handle Spork

I know. A spork. Stay with me, though. Backpacking meals come in tall pouches, and a regular spoon leaves your hand covered in dinner. This one is over eight inches long, so it reaches the bottom corners with room to spare. It weighs 0.65 ounces, which is basically nothing.

The polished bowl is the detail I love most. Some titanium utensils feel scratchy in your mouth. This one feels smooth, like real silverware. As a result, it’s the first thing I pack and the last thing I’d give up. It’s also nearly impossible to break, so it’s a gift that lasts.

Sea to Summit Lite Line Clothesline

Wet socks are the enemy. Put them back in your pack wet, and you’ll have wet socks tomorrow too. That’s where this clever little line comes in. It’s a beaded cord about eleven feet long, and it weighs 1.3 ounces.

Here’s the smart part. You tuck your clothes between the beads, so nothing slides and you don’t need clothespins. Then you string it between two trees and let the breeze do the work. In addition, it earns its keep off the trail. It strings up just as easily across a hotel bathroom. For that reason, it’s a great pick for travelers as well as backpackers.

GSI Outdoors Escape Collapsible Cup

Coffee first. Always coffee first. However, a regular mug is a bulky thing to carry into the woods. This cup solves that. The silicone sides fold down nearly flat, so it tucks into a stocking as easily as it tucks into a pack. Then it pops back up into a full-size cup.

It weighs just a couple of ounces, and the reinforced rim keeps it sturdy in your hand. As a result, I get a real cup of coffee at camp without giving up pack space. It’s also handy for day hikes, road trips, and picnics.

Katadyn BeFree Replacement Cartridge

This is the least glamorous gift on the list, and it might be the most appreciated. Water filters slow down over time. Eventually, they need to be replaced. However, most backpackers and hikers put that off far longer than they should.

So if your person owns a Katadyn BeFree, a fresh cartridge is a quietly perfect gift. It says you pay attention. It also means her filter will flow fast again on the first trip of spring. One warning, though. Check that she has the BeFree before you buy, because this cartridge only fits that filter.

Three More Stocking Stuffers for Backpackers That Feel Like Big Gifts

These next three still fit in a stocking. However, they feel more like a real present when she pulls them out.

Katadyn BeFree Water Filter

If she doesn’t own a BeFree yet, start here. I call it the cool aunt of my pack because it’s easygoing and always fun to have around. It’s a soft flask with a filter in the cap. You scoop from a lake, screw the top on, and drink. That’s it.

Because there’s nothing to pump, I drink more water on the trail. Consequently, I feel better at the end of the day. It also rolls up small when it’s empty, which is why it fits in a stocking so well. For a day hiker, this might be the only filter she ever needs. For a backpacker, it’s the fastest way to fill up between camps.

Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Inflatable Pillow

For years, my camp pillow was a stuff sack full of yesterday’s clothes. It was lumpy and it smelled like a trail. Then I tried a real camp pillow, and I’m never going back.

This one packs down smaller than a coffee mug. Still, it inflates into something that feels like a pillow, with a soft top that doesn’t crinkle. You can also let a little air out to get the height just right. As a result, I sleep better, and my neck doesn’t file a complaint in the morning. It’s a small gift with a big payoff for any backpacker.

MSR Pocket Rocket 2 Stove

Yes, a stove fits in a stocking. This one folds down smaller than my fist and weighs about 2.6 ounces. I wrote a whole review calling it a North Woods love story, and I stand by every word.

It’s simple, which is why I love it. You screw it onto a fuel canister, light it, and wait a few minutes for boiling water. Then it’s coffee time. Because it’s so easy to use, it’s a great first stove for a new backpacker. Likewise, it’s a welcome upgrade for anyone still carrying a heavy old one. Just remember that the fuel canister is sold separately.

How to Build a Themed Stocking

Want to look like a gift-giving genius? Group a few of these stocking stuffers for backpackers together. Here are three combinations I’d be thrilled to get.

The camp kitchen stocking pairs the Pocket Rocket 2 stove with the TOAKS spork and the GSI collapsible cup. Add a couple of her favorite freeze-dried meals and some good instant coffee. Now she has dinner and breakfast covered.

The clean water stocking pairs the BeFree filter with a replacement cartridge. As a result, she’s set for seasons, not just one trip. Tuck in some electrolyte tablets to round it out.

The camp comfort stocking pairs the Aeros pillow with the Lite Line clothesline. Then add a pair of warm wool socks. Dry clothes and a real pillow turn a rough night into a good one.

What I’d Leave Out of the Stocking

Honesty is the whole point of this blog, so here’s the other half of the list. Some small gifts sound great and never leave the house.

First, skip anything heavy. If it weighs more than it’s worth, it stays in the closet. Second, be careful with scented items like lotions and lip balms. In bear country, anything that smells good has to be stored with the food. As a result, it becomes one more thing to manage at night.

Finally, think twice about gadgets with a dozen functions. Most backpackers end up using one of them. A single tool that does its job well beats a clever one that does ten jobs badly.

Stocking Stuffers for Backpackers vs. Day Hikers

Not sure which ones fit your person? Here’s the easy way to sort them.

For day hikers, start with the BeFree filter, the spork, the cup, and the clothesline. They’re just as handy on a day hike or a car camping weekend. So if your hiker is home by dinner, this group is for her.

For backpackers, add the stove and the pillow. Both are made for someone who sleeps outside. Of course, a backpacker will happily use the whole list, because she’s a day hiker too on her shorter outings.

Pack on, smile on, and every gift on this list somewhere inside it. These are the small things that earn their spot when you’re carrying everything on your back.

A Few Things to Know Before You Buy

First, check what she already owns before you shop for stocking stuffers for backpackers. Nobody needs two stoves. On the other hand, a second spork is never a bad thing, because they tend to wander off.

Second, remember what’s not included. The stove needs fuel, and the replacement cartridge needs a BeFree to go with it.

Finally, order early. Small gear like this sells out fast in December, and shipping slows down the closer you get to Christmas.

My Honest Final Verdict on Stocking Stuffers for Backpackers and Hikers

If you only buy one thing from this list, make it the spork. It’s tiny, it’s affordable, and I promise she’ll think of you every time she eats dinner without wearing it.

However, if you want the gift that gets a gasp, go with the pillow or the stove. Both feel far bigger than they are, and any backpacker will put them to work on her very next trip.

Shopping for something larger? I also wrote a guide to gifts for backpackers that covers the bigger items. In addition, my full list of Christmas gifts for hikers has all 14 of my favorites in one place.

Thanks for being here. Now go adventure.
