Eight years. Two filters. One very important lesson about silty rivers.

Let me tell you about a backpacking trip that changed my gear game forever. It was a 14-day trip on the Superior Hiking Trail. It rained for two days straight at the start. The rivers were absolutely silty from the runoff and my Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Filter clogged almost immediately. We had to leave the trail, hitch a ride to Duluth, buy new filters at Duluth Pack, and head back. Rookie mistake. Expensive lesson.

That’s also where and why I bought my BeFree. But here’s the thing — I never stopped using my Hiker Pro. Eight years later it’s still in my pack and I’ve repurchased it. My husband started using one first and I bought my own because we were fighting over it on the weekends. 😄

Why I Love It

The Katadyn Hiker Pro is the Dad Bod of my filtration family. Not flashy. Not trying to impress anyone. Just reliably showing up every single time and getting the job done. Here’s what I love:

  • Speed. It fills my 3 Liter Platypus Big Zip EVO hydration bladder fast. On a hot day on the North Shore that matters more than almost anything.
  • Ease of use. Eight years in and it still feels intuitive every single time.
  • Reliability. It just works. Every time. No drama. Total Dad Bod energy.
  • Compatible. Works perfectly with my Platypus Big Zip EVO bladder and most standard hydration packs.

The One Thing You Need to Know

Silty water is the Hiker Pro’s kryptonite. If it rains and the rivers get silty, that filter will clog fast and then you’re in trouble. Ask me how I know. 😄

I learned the hard way on that Superior Hiking Trail trip. Now I always throw a few coffee filters in my pack. A coffee filter secured with a hair tie over the end of the hose acts as a pre-filter and catches the silt before it ever reaches your Hiker Pro. Simple, lightweight, cheap, and absolutely brilliant. You’ll know your filter is starting to clog when it gets noticeably harder to push.

💡 Pro tip: Always pack a few coffee filters and a hair tie. If it looks like rain or the rivers are running murky, put that coffee filter on the end of your intake hose before you start pumping. It could save your trip.

My Husband Uses One Too

My husband is a hunter and he started using the Katadyn Hiker Pro first. I borrowed his so often on our weekend adventures that I finally just bought my own. Some gear you share. The Hiker Pro is not that gear. 😄

Would I Repurchase?

I already have. Eight years and going strong. The Katadyn Hiker Pro is as dependable as they come — and in the backcountry, dependable is everything.

The Bottom Line

The Katadyn Hiker Pro is not flashy. It doesn’t need to be. It shows up, pumps clean water, and never complains. Just pack your coffee filters, watch for silty water, and this filter will be your most reliable trail companion for years to come. He doesn’t need the spotlight. He just gets the job done.
