I’ve spent a lot of money chasing skincare that promises to fix crepey skin. Most of it has gone straight into the trash. So when I signed on to test Necessaire body retinol and serum for a full six months, I went in skeptical, a little annoyed at myself for hoping again, honestly. Here’s my honest take on both products, several weeks into the plan, from the ingredients on the label to what’s actually showing up on my skin so far.
Necessaire built its name on “the basics, done right.” Think fragrance-free, dermatologist-reviewed formulas without a ten-step routine attached. These two products tackle a problem most of us over 50 know well: body skin ages differently than face skin. Almost nobody makes serious treatment products for it. That’s exactly why I wanted to put them through a real test.

The Plan: Six Months, Before Photos, and Zero Filters
I started using both products on June 29th, my wedding anniversary, so I’ll never lose track of the date even if I lose track of everything else. My plan is straightforward, if not exactly comfortable: use the Body Retinol and Body Serum daily for six months, then hand you a real before-and-after instead of a rushed few-weeks verdict.
Step one of any before-and-after is the before part, and nobody warns you how that actually feels. I took photos of my thighs, stomach, and arms before I started. Yee-Gads. Talk about a bitch-slap of reality there. Big sigh. There is nothing like an unposed, unflattering, un-flexed photo of your own body to remind you exactly why you’re doing this in the first place.
I’m not waiting until month six to tell you something is happening, though. Something is already changing, and you’ll find exactly where below. The full before-and-after, side by side, is coming once I’ve put in the whole six months. Consider this the honest progress report, not the final word.

What’s Actually in The Body Retinol and The Body Serum
Before I get into how they felt, let’s talk about what’s in the bottle. That’s where most body-care products fall apart.
The Body Retinol ($65 for 150 ml) is built around 0.1% pure encapsulated retinol. It’s paired with glycolic acid, mandelic acid, niacinamide, a peptide blend, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid. That’s an ambitious ingredient list for a body product. Independent ingredient analysis backs it up, too. It rates the formula highly for tackling texture and tone through real, proven actives instead of marketing fluff.
The Body Serum ($55 for 150 ml) takes a simpler approach. It’s built on 0.5% pure hyaluronic acid across five molecular weights, plus glycerin and niacinamide. No silicones, phthalates, parabens, or PEGs. It’s fragrance-free and non-comedogenic, and it carries National Eczema Association approval. That matters if your skin gets reactive in the winter the way mine does.

My Honest Experience with The Body Retinol
Retinol on my face is old news at this point. I do skin signaling, and I’ve used tretinoin for years. Retinol on my body, though, was new territory. I treated it that way. So I started once a week on my arms and the backs of my thighs, just like the beginner instructions say, then worked up from there.
The texture is where this one wins me over. It’s a gel-serum that sinks in fast. It doesn’t leave that sticky, tacky feeling body treatments so often do. No standing around waiting for it to absorb before I can get dressed. Honestly, that alone would be enough to keep me using it.
I’m not going to pretend body skin transforms overnight, because it doesn’t. But the texture on my arms noticeably smoothed out over the weeks that followed. The crepiness I’ve been self-conscious about started to soften, too. Necessaire’s own clinical data lines up with what I felt. In their study, 85% of testers reported less crepiness and more even texture after four weeks. That tracks with my experience so far.
One honest caution, though: this is a real retinol product, not a gentle body lotion in disguise. If you’re new to retinoids anywhere on your body, start slow and don’t skip the sunscreen. My skin handled it fine. You might need a longer ramp-up, and that’s completely normal.

The Body Serum: My Go-To Hydration Layer
If the retinol is the workhorse, the serum is the recovery. I layer this on nights I’m not using the retinol. On the mornings after, I reach for it too, when my skin needs extra water back in it.
This one is genuinely low drama. It’s fragrance-free and fast-absorbing, and it plays nicely under moisturizer. You can even mix it right in, which the brand recommends for faster application. My skin felt plumper within a few uses, not just softer. That’s the multi-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid doing its job at different layers of skin. It’s also considerably thicker than the Maelys Re-Lure Tight and Tone Body Serum I was using before this one. I can feel the difference in how much water it actually holds against my skin.
If your skin runs sensitive, this is the safer starting point of the two. Independent ingredient analysis rated it low on irritation potential. I never noticed so much as a hint of redness.

Who This Necessaire Body Retinol and Serum Duo Is Right For
This pairing makes the most sense if you’re already comfortable with actives on your face. From there, it’s an easy step to bring that same seriousness to your body. Have you noticed crepiness, uneven texture, or tone changes on your arms, chest, or legs? If you’re tired of body lotions that do nothing but smell nice, this is worth the investment.
It’s not the right starting point if you’ve never used a retinoid anywhere before. Start on your face first, and get a feel for how your skin reacts. Bring the retinol to your body once you know your tolerance. The serum, on the other hand, is gentle enough for almost anyone who wants better hydration without a fragrance load.

The Honest Verdict on Necessaire Body Retinol and Serum
At $65 and $55, this isn’t a cheap habit to pick up, and I get to say that with some real math behind it now. I started on June 29th, and I’m already hitting the bottom of both bottles. That’s roughly two months of daily use out of one bottle of each. Stretched that far, the cost looks a lot more reasonable than it does sitting on a store shelf. Body skin gets ignored by almost every skincare brand out there. Necessaire is actually trying to treat it like it matters. The Body Retinol earns its price with real actives at real concentrations, not just a trendy label. Meanwhile, the Body Serum is the easier sell: gentle, effective, and genuinely pleasant to use every day.
My take, two months into a six-month plan: if you can only buy one, start with the Body Serum and see how your skin responds. Add the retinol once you’re ready to commit to the routine it actually requires. Unlike a fancy lotion, this one only works if you use it consistently , and I’ll have the before-and-after photos to prove whether that consistency paid off.
Have you tried body-specific retinol before? I’d love to hear how it worked for you, or what you’re still hunting for in your own routine. I’ll be back in a few months with the full before-and-after to show you exactly where this experiment landed.
